Brain Tumor Treatment From a Neurosurgeon
Brain tumor treatment involves visiting a neurosurgeon. How do you know if you might have a brain tumor? Common signs include severe headaches, seizures, drowsiness, sleeping problems and personality changes.
Neurosurgeons cab help brain tumor patients
Thinking that you may be in need of brain tumor treatment? The only way that someone can know for sure is to undergo certain medical tests, including MRIs and biopsies. Neurosurgeons can both diagnose and treat brain tumors, of which there are different types. The type of tumor that one has will ultimately determine the type of treatment they need, as some tumors are benign, while others are malignant.
Treatment options for treating brain tumors
There are three common brain tumor treatments that neurosurgeons provide for patients in need. Once it is determined which treatment option needs to be utilized, a personalized brain tumor treatment plan is made for the patient.
#1. Observation
Observing brain tumors is sometimes necessary, also known as "watch and wait" treatment. This type of treatment is often reserved for patients who have very small brain tumors or slow-growing brain tumors, those who have other health conditions and older adults. The observation treatment process requires patients to be consistently monitored over a certain period of time to check on the growth of the tumor, as well as learn if the patient is experiencing any additional symptoms.
#2. Surgery
Surgery is a common treatment used to address large and/or aggressive brain tumors. The patient's circumstances will determine the type of surgical process they will need to undergo in order to remove the brain tumor. For example, some patients will be able to have all their brain tumor removed, while others may benefit from a partial removal. Partial removal of tumors is typically necessary when a tumor is located near sensitive areas of the brain.
#3. Radiation and chemotherapy
Some patients may also need to undergo radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy after undergoing a surgical process to treat their brain tumor. Both treatments are used to destroy tumor cells. While there are many different types of radiation therapies available, the most commonly used is known as external-beam radiation therapy. There are also many different types of chemotherapy options, and the right one will be chosen for each individual patient.
Experiencing any signs or symptoms?
To find out if you need brain tumor treatment, making an appointment with an experienced neurosurgeon is the next step. If you are experiencing one or more of the signs and symptoms associated with having a brain tumor, the sooner you are evaluated, the higher the chances of treatment being successful. Since there are a few different treatment options available, it depends on your situation when it comes to which treatment you will need to undergo.
