POSSIBLE TREATMENT AND REHABILITATION
If our team can reach the area of the brain tumor, then we will recommend surgery. Depending on the type and size of tumor, we will attempt to remove all of it. We will go over all steps of the surgical procedure with the patient before-hand and the weeks following the procedure. We will answer all questions the patient has to ensure there is no confusion on any single part of the treatment process.
While there are other treatment options, such as chemotherapy and targeted drug therapy, we will consider all options before recommending a specific treatment options. If it is possible to remove the entire tumor with little risk to the individual, then we will strongly recommend surgery. During surgery, the patient will be completely asleep and will not have to worry about feeling pain. If the tumor is near certain sensitive areas of the brain, then we will remove as much of the tumor as possible.
Since brain tumors can develop in areas of the brain that control motor skills, speech, thinking and vision, we may need to include rehabilitation in a patient’s treatment plan. There are several options for patients following a brain tumor surgery:
- Physical therapy
- Occupational therapy
- Speech therapy
- Specialized tutoring for younger patients
If the patient needs help regaining control of his or her motor skills and muscle strength, physical therapy is an effective option. Patients who need help adjusting back into a daily routine will benefit from occupational therapy. Speech pathologists can help patients struggling with speech through the use of speech therapy. Children may need a tutor who can help them cope with the changes in memory and the process of thinking after the surgery.
While there are other forms of alternative medicine to help patients cope with any lingering pain, not all solutions will work for specific individuals. Anyone who is interested in alternative treatments needs to speak with us first to understand the situation before making a decision.
